What is a chattel mortgage and is it right for my business?

A chattel mortgage is a commercial finance product where your business takes ownership of the vehicle immediately and the lender registers a mortgage over it as security. It's one of the most common commercial vehicle finance structures in Australia because it allows businesses to claim the GST on the purchase upfront (rather than over time), claim depreciation, and potentially deduct the interest component of repayments. It's generally well-suited to businesses registered for GST. We recommend discussing the structure with your accountant before proceeding.

Can I finance a commercial vehicle as a sole trader?

Yes. Sole traders with an active ABN and demonstrable income are eligible for commercial vehicle finance through many of our lender partners. The assessment process looks at your business income, trading history (typically 12-24 months), and credit profile. If you're a newer sole trader, we also have lenders who offer low-doc options for businesses that can't meet standard documentation requirements.

How long can I spread repayments on a commercial vehicle loan?

Accepted Answer

Loan terms for commercial vehicles typically range from 1 to 7 years. Longer terms reduce monthly repayments but increase the total interest paid. Some lenders allow a balloon payment at the end of the term, which reduces ongoing repayments and gives you the option to pay off the residual, refinance, or return the asset. We'll model different term and balloon combinations so you can choose based on your cash flow needs.

Can I finance a used commercial vehicle?

Yes. Many of our lenders finance used commercial vehicles, though the vehicle age at the end of the loan term is often capped (commonly no older than 15-20 years).
